DILIJAN, ARMENIA

Dilijan is a town in the mountains of northeastern Armenia. These are wetter slopes and mostly have forest. There are monasteries around Dilijan, including Haghartsin.

Some views in Dilijan...

A few of the trees were showing hints of autumn foliage already (early September)...

There were some Soviet-style block apartments in Dilijan...

Some older men playing backgammon in Dilijan...

Sunflower seeds being sold at a market, but still attached to the heads (common in Armenia and Georgia)...

A park in Dilijan had a lot of odd paintings, like these...

Odd statue in another part of the park...

An old (very local) bus in Dilijan...

Not much traffic in this traffic circle!

One common scene in Armenia and Georgia are all the overground gas pipes...these are almost everywhere!

About 5 miles northeast of Dilijan is Haghartsin, a monastery with the main cathedral from 1281...

Inside (note the prism effect of the sunlight from one of the windows to the left)...

Closeup of the prism...

View of the ceiling and small chandalier...

Someone receiving some kind of sacrament...

A few more pics of Haghartsin...

Some mountain views from Haghartsin...

The road leading to Haghartsin (in thick forest--actually quite similar to Pennsylvania forests)...

Back on the road just south of Dilijan, this bus/van on the long grade uphill had a device to poor water from a bottle to keep the engine cool...

And leaving the Dilijan area through a tunnel to the south...
