MISCELLANEOUS BRAZIL
Here are pics from various parts of southern Brazil not covered in the other albums (so no pics from Rio, Ilha Grande, São Paulo, etc.). These pics will go generally from south to north.
Near Joinville (along the highway between Florianopolis and Curitiba)...
Nearby hills...
A Brazilian fire tree (Schizolobium parahyba) in bloom with queen palms in the hills above Joinville...
These look like the true açai palm, Euterpe oleracea (though it's native in northern Brazil, not in the south, unlike the açai do sul)...
Side road near Joinville...
About 50 miles northeast of Curitiba, around 2000' above sea level (high enough for Paraná pines, low enough for a lot of tropical plants)...
A palm (Attalea dubia) that is native and common in this area...
Attalea dubia in a wooded area with other trees...
Some mountains near Cajati (about half way between Curitiba and São Paulo)...
Brazil Highway 101 where it juts inland a bit from the coast near Rio Una (east of Santos). Note that there are some Tibouchina mutabilis in bloom here.
Highway 101 a little further east/northeast...
A bit further east/northeast is Caraguatatuba, a beachside town...
Looking away from the beach towards the mountains...
Further east/northeast along Highway 101 just west of the border between the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (the São Paulo side)...
A small bay just west of the state border...
Yet another palm picture...this time just east of the state border (on the Rio de Janeiro side) with queen palms on the hill and an açai do sul palm in the foreground...
A couple of ice-cream bean trees (Inga sp.) along a stream. This is a very common tree throughout Brazil...
Further inland, about 50 miles east of São Paulo were these silver-leafed Cecropia hololeuca...
Not far from this point was a billboard (along a superhighway) for Brazil's version of "Clucky's Fried Chicken!"
About half way between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro at the foot of the mountains of the Itatiaia region is the town of Penedo, which is a Finnish-German-Brazilian hybrid...
Note that this was the beginning of November...
But despite the German/Finnish theme, Penedo is still in the tropics (with lots of rain too!)...
I can never get tired of the açai do sul palms...
A neat bromeliad (some type of Alcantarea species)...
And one last pic...a view from the mountains west of Rio (and a part of a lake down below)...
All of the above pictures on this page were taken in October/November 2010 by Brandt Maxwell.
