DAR ES SALAAM

Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania and is the former capital (the current capital is a relatively small town called Dodoma, in the interior).

First, a picture taken while landing at the Dar es Salaam International Airport, about 10 miles outside of town...

A view of the main part of downtown (which has only a small section of high-rises)...

The Azania Front Lutheran church in the middle of town...

Mosque Street with 2 mosques visible...

A city bus in Dar es Salaam...

One of Dar es Salaam's more expensive hotels, the Mövenpick (with royal palms in front)...

The Dar es Salaam harbor...

View across the harbor towards Kigamboni, a relatively rural peninsula...

A streetside gas station...

Pineapples at a market at a bus stop on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam...

Peddling at the same bus stop (attempting to sell various items, such as cashews, to passengers on my bus)...

Peddler with an American t-shirt--for a bank in Pennsylvania (this sort of thing was actually common in Tanzania)...

By chance, I happened to be in Dar es Salaam at the same time as George W. Bush during his Africa trip. I saw his motorcade speeding through Dar es Salaam the first evening I was there. A lot of people lined the route, mostly out of curiosity. Here are several pics, though I'm not sure which car contained Bush...

A sign along a different part of the motorcade route (this had been taken down a few weeks later when I returned to Dar es Salaam at the end of the trip)...

Neem trees (Azadirachta indica) in Dar es Salaam (this was one of the most commonly planted trees in Tanzania, despite being native to India)...

Boulevard in Dar es Salaam with another Indian tree, the ashoka tree(Polyalthia longifolia), aalso one of the most commonly planted trees in Tanzania...

Dar es Salaam Botanical Gardens (a moderately small garden covering about one square block)...

An African teak (Milicia excelsa) in the botanical garden...

An East African mahogany (Khaya nyasica) in the botanical garden...
