DUBAI (UNITED ARAB EMIRATES)

Here are the pics from Dubai. For pics of neighboring Sharjah, go here.

A shared water taxi along Dubai Creek...

Dubai Creek (actually an inlet of the Persian Gulf), separating the older neighborhoods of Bur Dubai and Deira. The haze was thick due to a Persian Gulf marine inversion...

Street in Bur Dubai...

Mosque in Bur Dubai...

Arab Mannequins in a souk...

The famous gold souk in Deira...

A small mosque in Deira...

Deira during the midday "siesta" (even in winter, when it's mild, there's a long break in the early afternoon)...

However, they make up for this with heavy activity at night (this was around 11 PM--barber shops were even open then!)...

Now, to the newer, rapidly expanding parts of Dubai...

Sheikh Zayed Road, where dense skyscrapers extend almost to the sides of the freeway...

Another skyline pic, near Sheikh Zayed...

A neat little globe statue in the same neighborhood...

Well-irrigated geiger trees (Cordia sebestena) in that same neighborhood...

The Burj Dubai, under construction, and now the world's tallest building...

A few coconut palms near the airport. Coconuts are somewhat marginal in Dubai (all had no fruit). In contrast, the date palm (seen in background) is ubiquitous...

Fog sign near the airport (the morning dense fog lifted before my flight to Tanzania, though there were still slight delays out of Dubai International Airport)...
