AQABA (JORDAN)

Aqaba is a city in far southern Jordan along the Gulf of Aqaba, which is connected to the Red Sea. It is surrounded by desert.

A boulevard in Aqaba...

The beach...

Date palms along the beach...

Very nearby...

Aqaba is within about 20 miles of 3 other countries: Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. In this pic, you can see Israel very easily (Eliat is a city mostly on the hill in the right background). Egypt is not far to the left on the other side of the Gulf of Aqaba. Aqaba is in the foreground to the left.

A closer look at Eliat (everything on the other side of the water--especially the tall buildings)...

A little to the south...here is the border with Saudi Arabia (though there is no city on the other side--just a large customs facility towards the left at the top of the hill and the buildings in the background to the right). The covered drive is on the Jordanian side and the flag marks the actual border.

Closer look (note the road is surrounded by two fences between the two countries' customs buildings)...

Back to Aqaba...a city street in the city center...

A moderately common tree, the lebbeck (Albizia lebbeck)...

There were many royal poincianas in Aqaba, and this one near the outskirts was beginning to bloom...

Just north of town were a few native acacia trees (probably Acacia gerrardii)...

And further north (by about 40 miles) were these scenes...
