EARLIEST SUNSETS OF THE YEAR
(IN VARIOUS US AND WORLD CITIES)

The time of the earliest sunset of the year is determined by latitude, longitude and the time zone. Obviously, during winter, the further away from the equator one gets, the earlier the sunset. The further west one goes within a time zone (without crossing into the next time zone), the later the sunset.

The earliest sunsets of the year occur usually a few weeks before the winter solstice, versus the latest sunrises which occur a one or two weeks after the winter solstice, as the solar noon (which is the middle of the day, when the sun is highest) varies due to effects related to the tilt of the earth's axis relative to its motion around the sun).

In the Southern Hemisphere, a similar phenomenon happens where the earliest sunsets occur before their winter solstice (June).

* Fuyuan, China, and Aralik, Turkey, near Mt. Ararat, are in the extreme eastern portions of their countries with single time zones.

** Quito, Ecuador's earliest sunsets fall in early November, which is actually during spring as Quito is about 15 miles south of the equator. The length of day has almost no variation with the time of year, but the time of sunset (as well as sunrise and the solar noon) vary slightly throughout the year.

*** Uluggat, China, near the westernmost point of that nation, has a solar noon averaging around 3:00 PM, due to China being entirely within one time zone. Therefore, sunsets will be very late year-round.
