PANAMA CANAL (OTHER)

Here are pics along and near the Panama Canal. Go here for pics specifically from Miraflores Locks (including passing ships).

A bit downstream from Miraflores is Puente de las Americas (along the Pan-American Highway)...

A black hawk eagle (with the bridge in the background)...

Upstream from Miraflores is a lake that is connected to the Panama Canal...

A ramp along the lake (barges/ships do not enter this lake, just small boats)...

A hillside along that lake with numerous barrigón trees (Pseudobombax septenatum)...

A small island with what appears to be a coral tree (and barrigón trees on the background slope)...

A road parallel to the Panama Canal (going through mostly rainforest)...

One of the native palms, the mocora palm (Astrocaryum standleyanum), along that roadside...

Inside the rainforest (though during the drier season, so many recently fallen leaves covered the ground)...

Native Schefflera (Schefflera morototoni) along the roadside...

Non-native queen's crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa) in the town of Gamboa with some "autumn foliage" due to the drier season...

Nearby Miconia tree (not sure of the species, but this is probably native)...

Close-up of blooms...

There was a botanical garden near the canal that had a few notable trees/plants, including a (likely native) strangler fig...

Non-native rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis, native to Brazil) in the garden...

Various palms in the garden, including a talipot palm on the right...

A non-native, very spiny bamboo (Bambusa spinosa)...

Native brownea tree (Brownea macrophylla) with its showy blooms in the garden...

Railroad crossing near the canal and botanical garden...

And finally, one last look at the Panama Canal (near Gamboa). You can see the same railroad track as the previous picture (just a different location)...
