OTHER PICS FROM SOUTHWESTERN MEXICO

This includes the agaves near Tequila (northwest of Guadalajara), other scenery between Tequila and Tepic (in Nayarit) and a few mountain scenes near Mazamitla (south of Lake Chapala). Pics south of Tepic (towards Puerto Vallarta) were included in the Puerto Vallarta pics.

First, many Agave tequilana (the agave which is used for tequila production) plants in a field near Tequila...

A closer look at the plants...

Terrain west of Tequila (moderately mountainous)...

At the same location is this mystery shrub (with somewhat sycamore-like leaves, except opposite each other on twigs). This shrub was very common in this area...

Also, close by and very common, was this large shrub/small tree which is clearly related to elms (might be of the Trema genus)...

A little closer to Tepic, this is lava flow from Volcán Ceboruco (just inside the state of Nayarit), covering a rather large area...

Pines on a nearby hill (with some oaks and that mystery shrub)...

Oaks and pines...

Now...jumping to the mountains south of Lake Chapala, here's some pine forest (with, again, some oaks too) just south of Mazamitla...

Countryside around Mazamitla (Mazamitla is at 7000' elevation)...

In the town of Mazamitla (and many other places around) were a thicket of Cosmos bipinnatus flowers (native to the highlands). In the background, note the cypresses and the Ensete, a close relative of the banana (frequently planted in tropical highlands around the world)...
