PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA (PART II)

Here are more pics of Phnom Penh. Part I has the bigger tourist attractions of Phnom Penh.

A view from an observation area at the top of the Sorya Mall looking east (you can barely see the Mekong in the distance to the right)...

Sorya Mall (lots of motorcycles parked outside)...

Note there aren't too many skyscrapers in Phnom Penh (yet), but this is one (surrounded by a variety of other structures)...

Nice plaza not too far from the Mekong...

Queens crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa) in bloom--this is not only planted frequently here, it's native (note in cooler Hanoi, it was leafless in late February--this is a deciduous tree--but with daytime temperatures in the 90s here, it's in bloom).

Another interesting native tree--the freshwater mangrove (Carallia brachiata)--this is not actually a true mangrove...

The Central Market...

Inside the Central Market...

A bustling street near the center of Phnom Penh...

Another one...

A tuktuk in Cambodia with an important message...

A haircut place that charges 2 different rates based on language (note that both the US dollar and Cambodian riel are used interchangeably, but it's 4000 riel to the dollar, so one using dollars and English would pay twice as much!)...

A modern street...

A modern car...the Prius (actually occasionally seen in Cambodia)...

A very small gasoline station for motorcycles (note the small tank)...

A normal gasoline station (within view of the Central Market)...

The Orussey Market...

Inside the Orussey Market (basically a bunch of independent vendors)...

Unusual fruit bought in Phnom Penh (the rakam fruit--I've only seen this in Cambodia--it's a bit sour but otherwise like a cross between a banana, mango and orange).

Vegetarian restaurant (with a sign containing 4 languages--Khmer, Chinese, Vietnamese and English)...

Finally...a bit of a strange site...a lake used to be here (Boeung Kak), but it's been drained to make room for development. Hence...right now, it looks like a local desert!
