YEREVAN, ARMENIA (PART ONE)

Here are pictures from Yerevan, Armenia, primarily near the city center. Go to Part II for pictures in the outer parts of the city.

In the heart of the city is Republic Square (Hanrapetutyan Hraparak)...

Each night, Republic Square comes alive with a fountain show with colored lights shining on the streams of water...

Back to the day...views of Mount Ararat from near the city center...

Nearby American embassy...

Also nearby is the Surp Sargis (cathedral)...

The Armenians appear to be quite romantic as there is actually a 24-hour flower shop!

Here is the opera house in Yerevan...

The back side of the opera house...

Well-dressed women at the entrance...

However, in back, there were people (mostly children!) riding around in motorizes Hot Wheels...in public!

Nearby is a pedestrian mall called Hyusisayin...

A portrait painter at work at Hyusisayin...

One block away was this outdoor chess set...

There were a lot of Iranian tourists in Armenia. Here's a tour bus with an Iranian license plate...

A street performer playing an Armenian instrument called the duduk (note that the bench says "Yerevan" in Armenian)...

Go here for the more outlying higher elevation parts of Yerevan (including views of the city from above).
