COROICO, BOLIVIA

Coroico is a town about 40 miles northeast of La Paz as the crow flies (longer along the curvy mountain road). It is located around 5500 feet above sea level on a hilltop in the Yungas cloud forest habitat. To see the route to Coroico, including the mudslide that I encountered, go here.

First, a few views from the center of town (Plaza García Lanza)...

A soccer field with mountains in the background...

Some buildings on the outskirts of town...

There are a lot of vistas from around Coroico...

Distant cloudy/foggy view of the Coroico River below...

Road on the outskirts of town through a wooded area...

Now for some plants...first a tree that's probably a matico tree (Piper aduncum)...

A young Attalea palm (probably Attalea maripa) in the fog...

An odd large herbaceous plant that looks a bit like a nettle (possibly from the Urera genus)...

A shrub (might be a Palicourea) with interesting corrugated leaves (above the clouds)...

Now a view (albeit cloudy) towards the mountains...with snow...

Looking close up towards one of the peaks...

One more view...
