COUNTRIES AND DEPENDENCIES WITH THE MOST TOURISTS PER CAPITA
In recent years, France has been the country with the most tourists
(77 million in 2002). In fact, the number of tourists exceeded the
population that year. However, some small countries, especially
in Europe and the Caribbean (two major tourist destinations) have
many times more tourists per year than residents.
Normally, the lists on this website that contain countries do not
include dependencies. However, so many dependencies rank so high in
this category that they are included with the countries.
The figures below for a country are tourists based on the multiple
of the country's population. Thus, if a country had one million
residents and five million tourists (visitors), the value assigned
would be 5.
* Exact statistics were unavailable for Vatican City, which (with fewer
than 1,000 residents but yet many millions of tourists each year) would
be the overwhelming #1.
