SINGAPORE (PART I)

I had a 3 1/2 day stopover in Singapore on the way back from Myanmar. This is the second time I've been to Singapore (the first time was in 1997). Below is Part I, with Part II showing plants in Singapore Botanical Gardens.

First, some pictures from Singapore's Central Business District (CBD), though on a Sunday, with few crowds...

Republic Plaza is tied for the tallest building in Singapore...

A mix of older smaller buildings (built when Singapore was still British owned) and the larger newer buildings in the background...

Singapore is famous for advertising its many fines for many infractions...but this sign indicates they even charge sales tax on the fines!

Marina Bay, right next to the CBD...

Hotels on the bay...

The oddly designed Marina Bay Sands Hotel...

View of the downtown skyline from Mount Faber...

Mount Faber is a steep hill with a park, including some jungle...

Bauhinia kockiana vine on Mount Faber...

View of the bridge to Sentosa Island from Mount Faber...

Zoom in...

Aerial tram at Faber Park...

Many of the trams have superhero characters/symbols on the sides...

Singapore, with its Chinese majority, has a large Chinatown...

Lunar New Year decorations (this was shortly before the Lunar New Year)...

Pedestrian bridges with pink Bougainvillea are common in Singapore, including this one in Chinatown...

Juice stands are quite common in Singapore, often with rather exotic juics...

A menu (for one brand) at a store in Chinatown that sells a lot of odd foods (note that this store sells shark fins, which are used in shark fin soup)...

A man playing the yehu in Chinatown...

A Hindu temple in Chinatown...Sri Mariamman...

Durians for sale--the national fruit of Singapore. These tasty fruits have a strong odor, and are banned on the subway...

One of many signs banning durians on the subway...

The subway system is very clean, modern and safe (even having doors that are closed so people can't fall onto the tracks accidentally)...

Some unusual older buildings in Singapore (again, contrasting with the newer high rises)...

The Sultan Mosque in the Arab Quarter...

Upper class neighborhood in Singapore (near the botanical gardens)...

A few last pictures from another park...Bukit Timah...which has more forest...

Mushrooms on a stump...

Tree fern...
